What are renewable energy credits (RECs )?
Energy generated by wind and solar sold into the same grid as traditionally produced electricity which offsets energy produced by conventional methods.

Why does IREA sell renewable energy credits (RECs)?
To increase renewable energy resources, IREA sells wind and solar renewable energy credits. Wind and solar RECs come from Xcel.

The current price for wind RECs in 1 cent per kWh and 5.5 cents per kWh for solar. RECs can be purchased once, often, or every month.

It is easy to sign up to buy renewable energy credits with IREA. Download and fill out the renewable energy credit form and mail it with your next electric bill payment. The minimum purchase amount is $5.00, but there is no limit.

Why does IREA sell renewable energy credits (RECs)?
IREA purchases renewable energy through its wholesale power purchase agreement with Xcel Energy. Through this agreement we receive more renewable energy than is needed to meet the state Renewable Energy Standard. As a result, IREA is able to sell wind and solar RECs to customers who wish to support renewable energy production in Colorado.

Where is the renewable energy produced?
The wind RECs come from Colorado and Wyoming produced energy. The solar RECs come from energy produced around the United States.

How much do RECs cost?
The current price for wind RECs is $0.01 per kWh and $0.055 per kWh for solar. RECs can be purchased on a one-time or ongoing basis.

How do I purchase them?
It is easy to sign up to buy RECs with IREA. Download and fill out the renewable energy credit form and mail it with your next electric bill payment. The minimum purchase amount is $5.00.

Are REC purchases tax deductible?

Does purchasing RECs affect my power bill?
No. Purchases made towards RECs are listed as a separate line item.

Why should I buy RECs from IREA as opposed to a vendor/broker on the internet?
IREA does not add charges to the sale price of the RECs as can be typical in a brokered purchase.

Can I ever change my purchase amount?
Yes. To change the purchase amount, fill out a replacement REC purchase form.
