We are installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) throughout our territory. These new meters will increase reliability, let us better monitor demand and give you the ability to track your usage via a customer web portal.
We have created a series of short videos that address some customers’ concerns about AMI. Check them out, and if you have any questions contact us via e-mail or (800) 332-9540.
Some claim radio frequencies transmitted by AMI meters emit a form of radiation that causes damage to the human body. Scientifically, this is not true.
AMI meters are highly accurate and will not inflate or inaccurately increase your electricity usage.
Government & Third Parties
IREA is not installing AMI at the behest of anyone, including the government, and we do not share any personally identifiable information unless required by law to do so.
AMI meters measure what is happening on our system, not within your home. Our data collection stops at the meter and we cannot, nor do we want to, track your daily routine.
No personally identifiable information is transmitted by our AMI meters, and our network is protected by AES 128 encryption.
More than 7 million meters with our same configuration are currently in use, with no reported fires. Instead of batteries and metal suppression tabs, our AMI meters use capacitors that do not pose a fire risk.
